Guan Yu Lion Figurine – Red (SH033R)

A Lion Dance is traditionally performed during Chinese New Year and other auspicious events. Each lion is played by two people. The front performer controls the lion’s head, eyelids, ears and mouth, whilst the back performer controls its tail and bends forward to form the back of the lion.

The Red Lion: Guan Yu Lion
Traditionally, the lions in different coloured costumes were meant to personify historic characters from the classic Chinese novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms – namely Liu Bei and his five tiger generals, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Huang Zhong and Ma Chao.

Our Red Lion figure represents Guan Yu, the second brother, who is also revered as Guan Gong (Kwan Kung in Cantonese).

It has a red based face and red fur, and is generally used the most often in performances.
